How To Start Hula Hooping

How To Start Hula Hooping

By Jordan Snowden

So you want to start hula hooping, eh? Well, I'm here to help.

Let me begin by saying, welcome! You are joining an ever-growing community of supportive, kick-ass humans that challenge both their minds and their bodies.

Hula hooping is a fun, entertaining activity, and a workout. I believe once you start, you won't be able to stop.

So, what do I need?

First, you need to find the right type and size of hoop for you.

Hoop Empire offers an amazing size chart on their site that I recommend checking out.

Ok, so where can I buy them?

Etsy! Simply search hula hoops on the site, and add keywords like "taped hula hoop" or "polypro hula hoop" if you want to get specific.

Another favorite of mine is hoopologie.com.

Where can I learn tricks?

YouTube and Instagram are flush with videos of hoopers giving tutorials or their favorite tricks.

They are a great source, but when I began hooping (and didn't know what tricks were called or even where to begin) hoop-trix.com was my go-to.

Yes, it looks like it's from early-era internet days, but it's the most useful collection of hoop tutorials I've found to date.

The website breaks tricks down into categories and even provides a beginner section.

I'm ready to start, anything else I should know?

Give yourself space! It may seem like hula hooping is an activity confined to your body, but hoops will go flying in the air.

Outdoors is best if you're able to do so.

There are many sites offering paid hoop camps, online classes, etc.

But I have never paid for a hoop class myself. If you can teach yourself, utilize free videos on the internet.

Don't get frustrated. If one tutorial doesn't work for you, try another!

Mirrors help, you can see what you look like performing a move.

Everyone is different and everyone learns at their own pace. Don't put pressure or expectations on yourself.

Hooping is better with others. Try and find hoop friends to grow and flow with.

And don’t forget to add music and a cute outfit!

Shop here at Rave Bae Couture for some super cute 'fits to rave and hula hoop in!
